How technology is benefiting co-parenting

On Behalf of | Mar 18, 2024 | Child Custody & Support

Co-parenting is changing as the years go by. And one of the factors resulting in this change is the advancement of technology. Co-parents are now able to do things that were not possible in the past.

These include:

Easily access documents

Documentation is crucial in co-parenting. You need to have access to your child’s documents, including their birth certificate, school reports, medical records and so on. Before technology, co-parents had to meet to exchange documents or make numerous copies. But technology is changing this.

Numerous platforms allow co-parents to upload documents on them. Accordingly, each parent can easily access or download them.

In addition to uploading these documents, co-parents can keep them organized. For example, they may have a folder for medical reports and so on.

Communicate effectively

Miscommunication contributes to many disputes among co-parents. However, this is becoming less of a concern with technology. Besides physical discussions, co-parents can communicate via several channels that can be documented, including text, email and through apps. These channels are also beneficial to co-parents who are not yet comfortable with in-person conversations.

Share a calendar

Shared calendars have made work more manageable for many co-parents, as they can highlight appointments on their calendars. When a parent sets a particular date, perhaps for a medical appointment, upon agreement, the other parent will receive a notification and set a reminder. This can reduce the possibility of forgetting appointments or the need to call each other to pass on information.

Connect with the child

A parent can connect with their child when they are with the other parent through video calls, text and email. Further, co-parents can upload videos and pictures of the child. This way, they don’t miss out on significant moments.

Co-parenting is expected to get even better with technology. You and your co-parent should obtain adequate information to know what works in your case.
